HIGH STREET
(EAST SIDE)
No. 46 (THE LION HOTEL)
GV
II
Formerly a coaching inn and now a hotel. The original building
c.1500 of hall and cross-wing is timber-framed and jettied with
very fine moulded ceiling beams and large inglenook hearth. In
C18 it was incorporated into a brick building with a street
facade of two storeys and attics, and nine bays including a
cartway. The cartway was rebuilt in the late C19 to three
storeys with a slated, gable roof with projecting bracketed
eaves.
High Street facade, largely C18 and C19 with C20 alterations and
details. Painted and rendered brick with rusticated quoins to
north. Plain tile roofs, end gable stack to south, ridge stack
and internal stacks. First floor range of six hung sash windows
with glazing bars and one canted bay window. Main entrance to
north of archway with canted bay windows flanking half glazed
panelled door and wooden architrave. Archway blocked.
Interior of c.1500 hall and cross-wing has fine moulded
cross-beams and cornice. The carved Agnus Dei boss at their
junction has carved foliage and is similar to those originally
in the hall of the Great Tower at Buckden Palace. Carved and
moulded mantel beam to large inglenook hearth. Other interior
details C19 and modern.
