Bakehouse, now used as a garage. Late C16 or C17, altered in C19 and C20. Original
walling of roughly coursed blocks of granite ashlar, patched and rebuilt with
granite stone rubble and some cob on the wall tops; corrugated iron roof (formerly
thatch).
Plan and description: the building faces south. The original bakehouse part is at
the right (eastern) end and there is a large disused end stack there and a disused
stair turret projecting from the rear wall. The internal walls are secondary,
probably C18 or C19 when the building was converted to agricultural use. The left
end is divided off and provides a pair of animal stalls entered from the left end.
The bakehouse was 2 storeys but is now open to the roof and the animal stall section
once had a hayloft over. On the front a large doorway has been knocked through to
the bakehouse section for its use as a garage. It has no doors. Roof is gable-
ended. The left end is open to the former stalls. To rear the newel stair projects
square and contains a small C17 2-light oak window. It is unglazed. To right of
this a ragged break can be seen between the original ashlar masonry and the
secondary rubble masonry. The latter includes a hayloft loading hatch.
Interior: there is a large bakehouse fireplace with massive granite lintel and plain
surround. It has a large side oven. The roof appears to have been rebuilt in the
C18 or C19 and is made up of A-frame trusses with pegged lap-jointed collars but
some C16 or C17 principals with curving feet have been reused.
The bakehouse forms part of a group with a number of other listed buildings in the
hamlet of Great Weeke.
