House, by tradition formerly a manorial court house. House is late C17 but shell is
earlier Granite ashlar walls raised with granite stone rubble and cob, plastered to
front only; granite stacks with plastered (probably brick) chimney shafts;
corrugated iron roof (formerly thatch).
Plan and development: symmetrical 2-room plan house with end stacks and central
staircase. The house faces south-south-east, say south. The right (eastern) room
was the kitchen, the left room was the parlour. The walls were raised to convert an
earlier building to the present late C17 house. However, within the scope of this
survey it was not possible to work out any elements of the earlier building.
Woodsheds either end of the front. Present house is 2 storeys with attics.
Exterior: symmetrical 2-window front of late C19 4-light casements with glazing
bars. Contemporary door in central doorway with granite-walled and monopitch slate
roof. Small woodsheds each end of front with monopitch roofs. Roof is gable-ended.
Interior is essentially intact although most of the joinery detail has been
replaced. The stair however is original, straight flight up to the first floor,
then winding up to the attics in the roofspace. The fireplaces are granite with
chamfered lintels and the crossbeams have plain soffit chamfers. Roof of A-frame
trusses with pegged lap-jointed collars.
To left of the porch a narrow garden strip is protected by late C19 cast iron spear-
headed railings with granite piers.
Court House is one of a group of attractive listed buildings in the hamlet of Great
Weeke.
