House. C16, floored over in stages in C17, C18 and C19, divided in C19
with S part a shop, restored c.1983. Timber frame on plastered brick
sill, roughcast with steep half-hipped thatched roof. A 1½ storeys, 3
cells, internal-chimney, lobby-entry plan house facing W, with later
single-storey rear wing with hipped tile roof. Entrance and main chimney
a third from S end, C19 internal chimney a third from N end. Front has 3
2-light flush casement windows, a half-glazed flush-beaded panelled door
in a glazed porch, 2 tall swept dormers with c19 2-light casements, and
ridges of roof higher between the 2 chimneys. Interior has jowled posts,
curved tension brace to S end wall visible on SW stair, and an
edge-halved scarf joint with bridled butts in the rear wallplate. Stud
and plaster pyramidial face of main chimney on upper floor may be old
timber chimney. C17 chamfered and stopped joists and axial beam to S
half of hall. C18 squared joists and axial beam of higher level in N
half of hall. Floor on rough split poles to N end unheated service
rooms. Unheated parlour at S end. Framing of lower swept dormers remains
in front slope. Exposed wall framing. Formerly called Orchard Cottage.
