Leigh Farmhouse with range of outbuildings forking courtyard on north front

Farmhouse, now divided. Late medieval, ceiled C16, enlarged late C17-early C18 one bay
east with dairy and cellar addition to north and range of outbuildings on north front,
altered C19 and mid C20. Roughcast over cob, painted brick right return gable end and
wing at rear, left return rubble, slate roof, triple Roman tiled wing at rear, brick
stacks gable ends, on stone base left and early C18 right, also between first and second
bays left of rain range. Plan: possibly double ended open hall house with byre adjoining
west on sloping site, dairy in south west corner, former demolished subsequently, house
extended one room east with dairy to north-east, entrance resited in former inner room
and stair inserted by blocked doorway of cross passage. Two storeys, 1:3 bays, gable end
of former dairy left, unlit with 2 raking buttresses, 2 and 3-light C20 casements,
entrance between first and second bays right, half glazed door rear elevation, pointed
arch chamfered doorframe to former cross passage, tiny stair light to left, 2-light hallow
chamfered mullioned window beyond, small glazed opening to former curing chamber in gable
end. Range of outbuildings,abutting north east dairy wing, timber framed with brick nogging
onto court-yard, chert random rubble exterior, triple Roman tiled roof continued over to
gable end forming porch. Interior: plank and muntin screen to cross passage exposed
in former kitchen, chamfered lintel with bread oven projection and former curing chamber
right, entrance now via room whose original purpose is uncertain; much alteration at this
end. Hall fireplace blocked, with plinth to rear wall in ross passage, former stair in
rear wall removed, chamfered beans with step and runout stops, chamfered wooden lintel
to bedroom fireplace at kitchen end with small pivot peg cupboard beside and remains of
plaster moulding, evidence of smoke blackened jointed cruck truss roof with smoke
blackening said to be evident over early dairy in north-west corner.
