Description

CULLOMPTON LANGFORD
ST OO SW
8/126
- Nos. 2 and 3
GV
II
A pair of dwellings, formerly a single house. Early C16, substantially remodelled in
C17. Cob, with some brick patching, stone plinth, plastered under gabled-end shingle
roof, the rear wing half-hipped. Originally a 3-room, through-passage plan. End
stacks; axial stack backing onto passage and heating hall; all with brick shafts. 2
storeys.
Front: 4-window range; all casement windows C19 or C20, timber or metal framed;
similarly to rear and rear wing; evidence of rear stair turret.
Interior: (No.2 only inspected, i.e. the lower end to right of passage); plank-and-
muntin screen to lower end of passage, muntins chamfered, with shouldered-arch
doorway; blocked doorway to right of axial stack (i.e. formerly giving access into
hall) with lintels chamfered and pegged into bressumer; cross beam to lower end room,
chamfered with run-out stops; 2 rear windows exposed internally; the C17 front door
survives in situ (although succeeded by a C20 outer door), planked with large spear
hinges; the medieval central hearth apparently survives beneath present floor
covering; large chamfered end fireplace. One jointed cruck visible, apex morticed
and side-pegged, trenched purlins, smoke-blackened. The lower-end appears to be
jettied out into hall (now No.2 and unoccupied at time of resurvey visit, 1985), the
bressumer supported by small brackets. Cross beams; fireplace lintel massive and
appears to be unchamfered.
