Description

SILVERTON FORE STREET (east side)
SS 90 SE
Silverton
7/250 No.8
-
GV II*
House, forming part of a row. John R L Thorp (reference below) has established that
nos. 6 - 12 were built together as part of the same medieval scheme, and it is likely
that the entire row (nos. 2 - 12) were built at the same time. C15 or early, with a
later (or rebuilt) rear wing, possibly late C16. Plastered cob with stone footings.
Thatched roof. The 3-room, cross-passage plan has been modified to fit into the
constricted site of the sub-divided medieval tenement. Hall and service area front
onto Fore Street and are divided by the passage; the inner room stands to the rear.
2-storeys.
Front: 2-window range; the hall is heated by a front external lateral stack, with
slated set-offs; horned sash windows to first and ground floor; front door, and
garage doors, the latter leading into former service room.
Interior: described in detail by J R L Thorp, 'Two Hall House in Late Medieval
Terrace: 8-12 Fore Street, Silverton', Proc. Devon Archaeological Society, 40 (1982)
171-80. The features noted by him there are still extant, namely the passage plank
and muntin screen, the ovolo moulded hall fireplace, the rear wing studded partition,
and the 3 jointed crucks (one with arched brace), and heavily sooted roofs with wind
braces. Medieval urban terrace developments such as this are exceptionally rare.
(these are illustrated, op. cit, plates IXa and IXb).
