Description

COLEBROOKE
SS 70 SE
3/84 Waterleat House
-
- II

Farmhouse. Probably C18, renovated 1937. Plastered cob on rubble footings; stone
rubble or cob stacks topped with C19 and C20 brick; thatch roof.
L-shaped building with main block facing south-east and comprising 3-room-and-
through-passage plan with the passage right (north-east) of centre. Right room has
end stack and centre room has outer axial stack. Service wing at right angles to
rear of left (south-western) room and kitchen with inner lateral stack adjoining
and agricultural outbuildings beyond, now domestic rooms. 2 storeys.
4-window front of 1937 casements with glazing bars including a symmetrical 3-window
arrangement about 1937 door right of centre. Roof is hipped each end. On left end
wall close to front corner is a plaque recording renovation of 1937. Rear block
has C20 casements throughout and the kitchen stack appears to be a rebuild of that
time.
Interior shows largely plaster and joinery of C19 and 1937 renovations but layout
suggests an earlier house. All fireplaces are blocked and only exposed beam, an
C18 plain chamfered crossbeam is in centre room of front block, other early
features are probably hidden.
