Description

COLEBROOKE PENSTONE
SS 70 SE
3/146 Linhays approximately 20 metres
- south-west of Penstone Barton

GV II

Linhays. Mid C19. Cob on rubble footings and timber framed; red tile roof.
Series of contemporary and contiguous linhays facing-northeast, backing onto and
following the curve of the road. There are 3 sections on slightly different
alignments but all are built in same style with cob rear and end walls and
otherwise timber-framed. At right end flanking farm entrance is a 5-bay linhay, a
central 3-bay section and at left end separated from rest by cob crosswall is a 9-
bay linhay. All are of identical construction (Alcocks Type T1) now with
weatherboarded fronts. King post roof trusses throughout. The rear cob wall
facing the road is broken by a series of pilaster buttresses. The linhays have
strong visual impact both to Penstone Barton Farmhouse (q.v.) and to its approach
by road.
