House and attached mill. C17 and Cl9. Large coursed and squared limestone to
house, ashlar to mill, stone slate roof. A symmetrically fronted miller's house
set in direct juxtaposition with the later mill building. House is 2 storeys
and attics, twin gabled, and a third smaller gable set back centrally. Ground
floor has 2-light and 3-light casements under continuous string; first floor
3:2:3-light and attic 2-light casements with ovolo-mould mullions, under stopped
hoods. Central plank door in depressed 4-centred arch, stopped moulded surround
and stepped string above, flanked by small quatrefoils: to the central gable an
oculus with 4 keystones. Plinth, coped gables with cross saddles; each main
gabled front has stepped diagonal buttresses. Right return runs back to plain
gable with large C20 stack, has 3 over 3-light casements as front gable. Set
back beyond this wing to the end of the mill in coursed rubble but ashlar at
right end; 2 storeys and attic. Large external stack with weathered offset and
rebuilt shaft, various 2-light casements and two 2-light wood casement hipped
dormers. Left return of house has a 3-light ovolo mould casement with stopped
hood over a 2-light plain chamfer, 2-light dormer. All windows leaded. Mill is
2 storeys and attic on high plinth, 5-windowed; 2-light plain flush chamfer
casements, all leaded and three 2-light wood casement hipped dormers. Ground
floor has plain plank doors at bays 1 and 4. Plinth, plat bands at two levels,
steps up to doors. Bell cote to coped gable left which has 3-light casement
over 2-leaf loading door at first floor,which here is also ground level. Back
has gabled wing, left has two 2-light flush chamfer mullion casements at ground
and first floors and a 3-light to gable with 2-light dormer on the return. Set
back is unit with ground stage in brickwork, a central eaves stack, and 2:2 two-
light casements below 2 hipped dormers. Remains of the mill leat come in at
ground floor of the wing. Interior of house not inspected, but includes small
stone C18 fireplace with moulded arch and decorative frieze, and in room left of
entry a stone flag floor with large fireplace with low segmental head in 3
voussoirs, chamfered only to the lintel.
