Description

PAINSWICK PAINSWICK HOUSE
SO 8610/8710
6/260 Spring head and pool,
c.150 m west of The
Stables
GV II*
Indicated on SO 8610 as Swimming Pool.
Plunge bath or pool and spring head. c.1750 possibly by Thomas Robins. Spring
head is an alcove in dry-stone squared limestone rubble with arched recess c.2 m
wide and 0.80 m deep supported by walling c.4 m wide and 2 m high to unfinished
top; the spring emerges in a stone trough to a small oval basin, from here water
is piped to a pool c.5 m x 3 m in ashlar with weathered copings and an inlet
recess at the north end, all within a brick 'container' c.7 m x 4 m; between the
pool edge and the larger enclosure there are remains of what might have been
column bases. There are steps into the pool, 2 above and 4 below water level,
and a series of 2:2:1 brass rings (one appears to be missing). One of a group
of garden elements in an important surviving rococo ensemble.
(Mowl, T and White, R; Thomas Robins at Painswick, Jnl of Garden History, Vol 4,
no 2).
