House. formerly a farmhouse. Circa late C15 or early C16, remodelled in C17 and
with C18 and C19 extensions. Stone rubble, rougcast west front. Dry rag slate
roof with gabled ends and red clay ridge tiles. Stack on left hand front corner
(former garderobe) with later stone rubble shaft and rear lateral stack with
stone rubble shaft. 2-room and through passage plan main range with a 1-room plan
wing behind the lower left end. The single storey outshut at the lower left end
is probably C19. 2 storeys. Asymmetrical 3-window west front. All windows with
slate cills to left C20 3-light casements with glazing bars, centre first floor
C19 2-light casements with glazing bars. Ground floor right C20 20-pane sash.
Central doorway with chamfered granite 4-centred arch frame and C20 plank door.
Asymmetrical rear elevation doorway to right of centre with chamfered granite 4-
centered arch frame and 2-light chamfered granite window above. Projecting stair
turret to right of doorway with small 1-light granite window and short gabled
wing on extreme right. Projecting lateral stack to left centre and at extreme
left hand end projection with hollow-chamfered ogee arch window. Left hand
(north) gable has projecting garderobe on on right corner (now a stack) with
small window slit, 2-light granite window to left and later outshut below. The
south gable end has granite 2-light window on ground floor and C20 12-pane sash
on first floor.
Interior: Hall has large chamfered granite lateral fireplace with cloam over,
renewed ceiling and doorway to closet with heavy chamfered wooden frame, its
arched lintel mutilated, closet has scratch moulded joists. Plank and muntin
screen between hall and passage with bead-moulded muntins and chamfered head beam
with ogee stops. Scratch moulded joists in passage. Solid wall between passage
and kitchen with heavy tubes doorframe, its arched head mutilated. Roughly
chamfered cross-beams in kitchen with ogee as step stops and fireplace in end
wall near corner its timber lintel raised and turned around; 2 ovens, one with
finely made granite dome. Stone newel stairs with large timber baulk treads.
Chamber over lower end has chamfered granite fireplace and heavy woods shelves in
niches by window. Hall chamber fireplace in gable end of dressed stone with
curved back and unchamfered timber lintel.
The 4 roof trusses over the high end have straight principles resting in the wall
tops (one slightly curved foot) mortice and tenoned apex and similarly jointed
cambered collars; some original purlins trenched into the back of the principles.
The 2 bays at the high end are smoke-blackened form the open-hearthfire; the
other 2 trusses are clean. The roof structure over the lower end of the house
was entirely replaced.
