Pair of houses, mid-C17 but with earlier fabric in cottage; C18 and C19
alterations. Coursed rubble with roughly-shaped quoins, except for
massive squared quoins to cottage ground floor; cut dressings; cottage porch
old brick with squared stone front; Welsh slate roofs with old brick stacks.
House double-span with late C18/early C19 part to rear, cottage with rear
outshut of uncertain date.
South elevation in 2 sections, each 2 storeys, 3 bays. House to left has C20
glazed door in old moulded surround with flat-pointed head, sunk spandrels and
hoodmould; 12-pane sash windows with tooled lintels and sills: traces of
older openings alongside. Cottage to right has central porch with boarded
door in chamfered surround, under coped gable: paired 4-pane casements in former
2-light windows (only that over porch retains its mullion) with recessed and
chamfered surrounds and hoodmoulds. House has coped gables; stepped-and-banded
stacks at ends and between house and cottage.
Left return of house shows chamfered attic window. Right return of cottage
shows 6-pane casements (thelower, to stair, with old bars), blocked 2-light
attic window and 4-pane sash set in chamfered opening of former doorwayinto
rear outshut.
Interior: House retains 4 original fireplaces (one large) with moulded surrounds,
flat pointed arches and sunk spandrels. Cottage has boarded front door, within
porch, with flat-pointed head in chamfered square frame; simple C18 stone fire-
places; kitchen ceiling (in rear outshut) has stop-chamfered joists.
Also known as Prior Mains. Formerly Corbridge Rectory, held in the medieval
period by Carlisle Priory.
