House, dated 17(3)1 with initials J K (John and Katherine Morpeth) on door
surround, rear outshut c.1790; cottage perhaps earlier, altered.
House front squared stone with cut dressings and graduated Lakeland slate roof;
kitchen wing coursed rubble with tooled dressings and C20 grey tile roof; cottage
squared rubble with large roughly-squared quoins, Welsh slate roof and old brick
stack.
South elevation: Main block 3 storeys, 5 bays, symmetrical. Rusticated quoins.
4 steps up to central double panelled doors in surround with panelled pilasters
carrying frieze broken forward at ends and ashlar panel above; 12-pane sashes
with 8-pane sashes above; on 2nd floor smaller 9-pane sashes alternate with
small-paned casements, all in raised moulded surrounds with projecting sills.
Old sundial above window on left of door. Coped gables with moulded kneelers;
stepped, banded and corniced end stacks with panelled shafts. Kitchen wing to
right; 2 storeys, 1 bay. 16-pane sash windows, coped right gable with moulded
kneelers and stepped, banded and corniced end stack. Cottage to left, 2 storeys
3 bays, irregular; renewed door and ground floor glazing, 6-pane Yorkshire sashes
above; raised reverse-stepped coping to left; ridge stack.
Rear elevation: main block outshut shows Roman altar with worn inscription built
in beneath stair window.
Interior: Contemporary fittings include 2-panel doors, fireplaces, dentil
cornice in drawing room and open-well cut-string stair with moulded newels
(lower fluted), vase-on-urn balusters, ramped moulded handrail and curtail step.
