12/199 The Mill House

Former mill house, now detached house. Early C17; enlarged late
C17. Random rubble limestone; ashlar chimneys; concrete tile
roof. Two-storey with attic; addition at west end forms L-plan.
North front: 2 gables each with small ball finial. Earliest part
of house to left with late C17 fenestration, altered at time of
enlargement. Three-light with single-light to left grouped under
hoodmould to ground and upper floor, 2-light with hoodmould to
attic, all chamfered mullioned. Single-window fenestration below
right gable, 3-light to ground and upper floors, 2-light to attic,
all with hoodmoulds. Doorway with chamfered opening and C20 door
is roughly central; single-light over. West side: 2 gables, one
with chimney having moulded cap, other with mullioned casements.
East side: gable end to right with 2 off-centre stair-lights.
Some C20 altered windows to other east-facing gable.
Interior: restored but many original timber partitions left with
framework exposed. Earlier part of roof has truss with curved
feet to principal rafters. Extended collar roof to later
addition. Stands on south side of mill pond formerly serving
Little Mill (q.v.).
