Country house, former seat of Hereford family, now of Sufton Court (qv).
C16 core, altered and remodelled during C18 and mid-C19. Timber-framed
core with part wattle-and-daub and part brick infill, brick and sandstone
rubble refacing and remodelling, rendered north-west front, slate roofs.
L-plan with main range north-east/south-west and cross-wing at north-east
end, through-passage and gable end stack to north-west and two further
lateral stacks to north-west face of main range. Two storeys and cellar;
north-west front, glazing bar sash windows flank stack to gable end of
cross-wing with right hand one in two-storey semi-circular bow addition
connecting with main range in angle of L to left of first lateral stack,
two glazing bar sash windows flank doorway with semi-circular-headed
window at mezzanine level to right of doorway, canopy on brackets,
panelled door, second lateral stack to right with a further two glazing
bar sashes to right; pair of star-plan shafts to stacks. C13 incised
coffin lid built into gable end stack. Interior reveals timber-framing
and plan of earlier house with hall and cross-wing, first floor hall of
two or three bays with moulded members, solar in cross-wing retains braces
of C16 painted decoration, roof largely that of C19 but two trusses to -
solar probably of C16 date. C18 staircase. Old Sufton had been the seat
of the Hereford family since C12.
