2 adjoining blocks, formerly 2 houses. Left hand block. 1560-70. 3 storeys with
5 gables to attic with moulded bargeboards and pendants. This storey was added
in early C17. Timber framed with close-set studding. Carved pilasters on each
storey. Attic floor and 3rd floor project on moulded bressummers. 2 canted bays
of sashes on ground floor. Coach entrance on left with flush panelled double doors.
All sashes mostly with glazing bars. Right hand block. Stands slightly in advance
of above. Early C17. 3 storeys. Close-set timber framing with plaster filling:
hipped slate roof. Top storey projects; the one below formerly projected but has
been underbuilt. Moulded bressummers remain on each floor and below top one and
eaves cornice are scrolled brackets with ionic caps. Sash windows and bay on right
hand of 1st floor. A late C17 wing at the rear of the 2 blocks shows a portion
of roof with heavy stone slates.
Interior: much altered but much timber framing exposed. 1st floor of south block
ceiling with decoration in form of cross within a large circle. Somewhat altered
staircase of late C17 with twisted balusters and heavy moulded strings. RCHM (25).
Nos 21 to 23 (consec), The Feathers Hotel Nos 26 and 27 and St Katherine's Chapel
and Hall form a group.
