Farmhouse
GV II
2 barns, granary and stable. Early C18 and mid C18. Limestone rubble with wooden
lintels and coursed rubble with ashlar quoins; corrugated-sheet roofs. 8-bay
barn, with opposed double doors in bay 4, has slits in line with the trusses.
5-bay barn, to left, has opposed double doors in bay 4 and has blocked
triangular slits. T-shaped 2-storey stable, returning to rear from right of
larger barn, has wood-lintelled openings, and has a later gable parapet facing
the farmyard--above a wide doorway approached by stone steps. 2-storey mid-C18
granary, in coursed rubble, is set between the rear doors of the barns, and has
a symmetrical 2-window front facing the farmyard; it has small 2-light casements
to both floors aligned above segmental-arched openings to a space beneath the
lower floor, and has stone steps leading to a central doorway above which is a
wooden dovecote. Interior: larger barn has closely-spaced trusses, with tiebeam
and collar, supporting 2 rows of butt purlins. Smaller barn has later trusses
with trenched purlins but may have an earlier origin. Granary is brick lined.
Stable has trusses similar to those of the larger barn and retains part of the
loft floor and some stall divisions. Range forms a close group with farmhouse
(q.v.) and shelter sheds (q.v.).
