4/18 Donhead Mill

GV II

Wrongly shown on OS map as Lower Mill. Water mill and house, now
house and workshops. Mid C18, altered C19 and C20. Dressed
limestone, tiled roofs, mill roof is half-hipped , gable end brick
stacks. L-plan, house has integral outshut. Two-storey, 2-
windowed; casements. C20 glazed door to centre, 2-light C20
casement either side, first floor has 2-light casements in moulded
stone architraves, coped verge to left. Right return has light
timber-framing with brick nogging to gable with large 2-light
casement. Attached to left is 2-storey extension, probably C19,
with 2-light casements and Welsh slate roof. Rear of house has C20
door with C20 casements to ground and first floors: first floor
created by raised eaves of outshut. Mill attached to right of
house has 2-light casements, ledged door and 3-light recessed
chamfered mullioned casement, mill race passes below two segmental
stone arches, partly replaced by straight stone lintel, right
return has 2-light casement to weatherboarded gable, stone buttress
to wall below, attached to rear of mill is range of workshops with
garage door and casements, half-hipped tiled roof.
Interior of house has chamfered beams, open fireplace with
chamfered lintel on chamfered stone jambs in outshut, original 3-
bay roof with two tiers of butt purlins and collars. Mill retains
part of cast-iron water wheel with lettering: E.S. Hindley of
Bourton, Dorset, 1887, one millstone retained in situ on ground
floor, now sitting room.
