Estate cottage, c1800 by J. Bradie for Joshua Smith of Erlestoke
Park, squared rubble stone with thatched pyramid roof and corniced
centre stack. One storey, picturesque cottage with Gothic details
and unusual plan. Front wall is canted each side to projecting
centre from which projects semi-circular bow. Bow has centre
double doors with pointed head flanked by Y-tracery pointed stone
windows, all three hoodmoulds linked. Canted walls each side also
have a 2-light Y-tracery pointed window with hoodmould. A low link
to left joins C20 matching addition with 2 pointed windows and
half-hipped thatched roof.
A design by John Bradie of 1800 is in the Cooper Union Museum, New
York.
