Description

SO 61 SE LITTLEDEAN -

10/65 Court House, walls and gatehouse

II*

Walls and gatehouse to Littledean Court House, formerly Gaol:
1788-'91, by W. Blackburn. Squared, coursed red sandstone with
ashlar dressings. Enclose a large square, with splayed corners,
gatehouse in centre of south face. Wall has two offsets and a
nearly-flush coping: in centre of wall face either side of
gatehouse externally is a large, plain ashlar stone. Internally
lower part of walls ashlar, no offsets. Gatehouse projects from
wall: projecting central part contains gateway, with lower,
slightly recessed wings each side. Gateway has 2-centred arch,
projecting roll-moulding all round, with above, on each side, a
blank shield. Projecting plain ashlar band matches frieze to
wings. Doors double, with 9 flush panels each, head of archway
filled iron grille. Outside a footscraper and 2 stone bollards.
Wings on each side have heavily-battered ashlar bases rising to
just above springing of gateway. Above each 2 square-headed
single-light windows, with iron bars. Internally wooden casing
for clock over entrance. Rooms each side, western originally
porter's lodge, eastern reception unit for prisoners.
