Description

WOOLASTON GENERAL
ST 59 NE
10/254 Walls surrounding the
churchyard to Church of
St Andrew, with gates
GV II
Churchyard enclosing wall, with gates. Probably C19. Sandstone rubble to saddle-
back coping of on-edge blocks, iron gates. A complete, roughly oval circuit with
the Church of St Andrew (qv) set towards the west end, walls variable, but generally
c 1.5 metres high. At the east end, pair of square piers c 620 mm square and 2.5
metres high, capped by low pyramid with roll mould, and pair of gates with spear-
head railings and to their left, a pedestrian swing-gate in half-circle rail
enclosure. On south side, opposite later cemetery, a similar small iron gate, and
diametrically opposite, to the north, a small pedestrian swing gate in half-circle
enclosure. At west end a round arched opening with small diagonally-planked door;
here a path also drops down, and the encircling wall is up to c 2.50 metres high.
The shape of circuit suggests the possibility of a Celtic site.
