187O-75 by Ewan Christian for J G Frith's (a local business man's) widow.
Very large 2 and a half storey "black and white" Elizabethan style house
apparently timber framed with stone dressings and plaster panels. Slate
and tile roofs, highly wrought spiral and otherwise chimneys in brick.
Numerous interior features (fireplaces, panelled and painted ceilings,
painted glass etc) survive. The initials J G F re-occur frequently.
Library ceiling said to have been painted by Gambier Parry. Staircase
with splat balusters. Lesser extensions to north-west. See: Building
News dated 9 October 1874, and The Architect dated 7 November 1874.
