Monument to crew of St Annes lifeboat. Late C19. Commemorates
7 members of the crew of the lifeboat "Laura Janet" who
perished while attempting to rescue the crew of the German
barque "Mexico" during a storm on the night of 9 December
1886. Red sandstone. Gothic style, in the form of a pinnacled
tabernacle approx. 4 metres high; mounted on a square platform
of 2 low steps, with a stepped plinth, cross-gabled blind
tabernacle with cusped arches and steep gablets, surmounted by
a short arcaded shaft with crocketed pinnacle. The arch on the
east side contains carving depicting the crew rowing the boat
through heavy sea, below which is a memorial inscription
including a list of their names; the other arches contain
various inscriptions. See also the lifeboat monument at South
