MOUNTNESSING ROAD
(West side)
Byre 20 metres east of The Hyde Farmhouse
GV
II
Byre, now stable. Late C17. Timber-framed, weatherboarded,
roofed with handmade red clay tiles. 4 bays facing SW, wide
enough for 2 lines of beasts. Lean-to extension to NW. Abuts
on other buildings to NE and SW, not of special architectural
or historic interest. Two C20 halved doors, three C20 fixed
lights. INTERIOR: hardwood frame. Unjowled posts. The NE
internal tie-beam has braces of serpentine curvature, tenoned
and pegged. The middle tie-beam has arched braces. Face-halved
and bladed scarfs in wallplates. Queen struts to clasped
purlin roof. The studding of the NW wall has been removed,
combining the lean-to in the same interior. Some posts
repaired with concrete plinths. The NW pitch of the 2 middle
bays of the roof has been altered at an early date, the
original rafters tenoned and pegged to an in-pitch purlin
supported on the tie-beams; other rafters carry the roof over
the lean-to at a continuous lower pitch. A gap in the mortices
for studding in the NW wallplate indicates that originally
there was an access for beasts on this side, to the road. This
is a rare survival of its type and period.
