High Street

House probably later C17. Rubble with stone slate roof. Two tall storeys, and
large attic lit from full height porch at front and large rear gable. The
portion fronting on South Street differs in surface treatment, the walls of No
17 being slobbered, but as one build the house appears to have been of three
bays with the porch forming an entry into the right hand end. Double chamfered
stone mullion windows, under continuous hoodmoulds in the first two bays,
detached hoodmoulds to the porch bay. The porch has a chamfered doorway
slightly off centre, a 3-light window above, and a stepped 3-light in the gable,
which is coped with heavy moulded kneelers. In the first two bays the windows
are of 4 lights, and 6 with a king mullion, below; and of 4 and 4 lights above.
Later chamfered doorway inserted between the bays. Both doors are unglazed.
Two moulded stacks, one on the left gable and one on the ridge. The rear is
formed of a massive gable with three bays of windows to two storeys, two sashed
with glazing bars. There is a 3-light double chamfered stone mullion window
with hoodmould in the gable, and a chimney on it. Interior not inspected but
may be of interest.
