House. c1720 with later alterations. By Sir John Vanbrugh for Charles
Howard, 3rd Earl of Carlisle. Tooled sandstone ashlar and Welsh slate roof.
Central-entry house with pair of pavilions and connecting wall between to
left. 2 storeys, 3 bays to main house. Double-leaf 6-fielded-panel door
with glazed upper panels in architrave with decorated pulvinated frieze
flanked by consoles holding moulded pediment. 6-pane sashes in architraves
with stepped keystones throughout. Moulded cornice. Low parapet with
ornamental urns to angles. Concealed roof with central corniced stack.
Adjacent pavilion: single tall storey with 3 bays. Casement windows under
flat arches. Hipped roof. Connecting wall: double-leaf board door under
flat arch and coping stones. End pavilion: 2 storeys, single bay.
