Milestone. C18, for Dunstable-St.Albans-London Turnpike Trust
established by Act of Parliament 1722, on the stretch of Watling Street
retained by Thomas Telford when he improved The Holyhead Road for mail
coaches in the second decade of the C19, but cut off by the A5 byepass
completed c.1957. White freestone rectangular section pillar about 12
inches x 15 inches, buried so that only the top 18 inches and the upper
inscription show. N and E faces cut back for repeated recutting of
inscriptions. The present inscriptions are in C19 sans-serif capitals,
that on narrower N face 'LONDON/28/MILES', that on broader E face starts
with figure '5' but is otherwise illegible. (Branch Johnson (1970)105).
