The Wakeman's House

C16 or C17. Timber-framed, formerly plastered. Stone slate roof. Two storeys and
attics. Two bay front: canted oriels on both floors, those on first floor with
hipped roofs, those on ground floor with a continuous pent-roof over both and the
intervening door: casements. Casement in gable end at attic level. Contemporary
door.
Interior. Staircase has highly idiosyncratic balusters, cut in the flat with a
pattern of discs and oblongs: simply moulded handrail.
History. Traditionally the home of Hugh Ripley, last Wakeman and first mayor ot Ripon
under the revised constitution of 1604.
