GV II
Barn. C18, probably for the Elwes family before nearby Throcking
Hall was demolished in 1744. Timber frame of pegged oak, dark
weatherboarded with a pitched roof now of corrugated asbestos. A
tall 3-bays aisled Structure with arcaded open end facing E. A
non-traditional farm building, possibly for overwintering cattle,
combining an unusual plan-form with very carefully finished oak
framing in an archaic tradition. Jowled arcade posts with curved
braces to arcade plate and tie beams. Aisle-ties with quadrant
braces. King-post roof with short, pile-shaped king-post and
cleated purlins. Open end has segmental-headed arched opening to
centre with quandrant braces to the square-headed side openings.
Face-halved bladed scarf joint used in arcade plate.
