Almshouse flats. Circa 1912 by Walter Cave. Red brick, stone dressings with
hipped plin tiled roofs; end stacks either side of centre, ridge stacks to wings.
Symmetrical , 2 storey, 3 bay block to centre with flanking 1 storey wings to ends,
projecting forward to form a courtyard in front. Central block with quoined ends,
plat band over ground floor; stone dressed mullion and transome (angle bay casement)
windows to outer bays rising through 2 floors and into the roof line. Centre divided
into 3 bays by quoined piers, arched arcade across ground floor, upper balcony above
with outer openings glazed. Staircase behind centre arch, recessed planked doors
in arched openings to ends, further doors in quoined wings to side. Central lantern
on bracket over ground floor arch.
Part of Whiteley Village, laid out on an octagonal plan, commissioned by William
Whiteley of Whiteley Stores to provide housing for thrifty old folk.
