Welsh slate signed Piley, Lester, with relief carving of a mourning woman at a tomb with urn. To the memory of John Hunt, Gent, d. 28th May 1816 age 32. -Spectator learn while near this stone you tread/ The trump may sound and instant raise the dead/ Or in a moment destitute of Breath/ You may like me soon tread the vale of death/ Tis true wise Nature with the kindest care/ Has bid mankind their helpless offspring raise/ Then what can more affect my dying heart/ Than from my pregnant Wife and Babe to part-. Also to Sarah his relict d. 20th Jun 1865 age 78. The broken rhyme draws ones attention to infant mortality: an adjacent plaque is to their son Orlando d. 15th Apr 1811 age 7 weeks. Another slate by Piley to Rev John Hunt d 10th Jul 1806 age 78. These Hunt memorials are fixed to the C18 churchyard wall shared with the Manor and heightened in the C19. They were probably moved when Slater and Carpenter rebuilt the chancel 1870 to 73. (Photo Oct 2014).
