GV II

House. Early C18 with C19 alterations. Coursed squared ironstone, slate roof,
blue brick ridge and end stacks on stone bases. 3-unit plan. 2 storeys and
attic; 5-window range. Central 6-panel door with wood lintel and straight hood
on brackets, approached by 3 stone steps. Two canted bay windows to right of
centre with horned sashes, otherwise horned sash windows to ground and first
floors, all with wood lintels. 4-light chamfered stone mullion cellar window to
left of door, quoins to 3 C19 gabled dormer windows. Long 2-storey wing to rear
left. Interior: ogee-stop-chamfered spine beams; open fireplace with
ogee-stop-chamfered bressumer; open-well staircase from ground floor to attic
with serpentine splat balusters; fitted cupboard with semi-domed head; stone
cellar. Believed to have been a coaching inn and the original 'Red Lion';
malting house and corn chandlers premises C19.
