23.11.73 Barn approx. 25 metres south-east
of Highlands Farmhouse, with
attached stable and yard wall
GV II
Threshing barn, with attached stable and yard wall. c.1800. Timber frame on
brick plinth, with weatherboard cladding and red tile roof (slate roof to stable).
The barn is rectangular on a north-east/south-west axis, and 3 bays with a porch
and outshut on the south-east side; the threshing floor in the 1st bay has
opposed wagon entrances (now lacking doors), that at the front covered by a
porch with a hipped roof, and to the right of this porch is a continuous outshut
under a catslide roof; the north-east end now has 2 vertical openings and a
square loading door above; and the interior (of machine-sawn post-and-truss
construction) has a roof truss with 2 queen struts, and various wooden partition
walls. The stable, a full-height lean-to attached to the south-west end, has 3
stable doors. The yard wall is attached to the left rear corner of the stable,
enclosing an oval area approx. 10 metres long beyond that end and returning in a
curve to form the boundary between the yard and the entrance drive (the wall
on the other side of which is listed under item 3/140 above); it is of flint and
brick, approx. 1½ metres high, with some integral piers, finishing courses, and
rounded coping all of brick, and has a gateway opposite the stables. This item
forms a close functional group with the granary (item 3/142 below).
