7.9.51 Highlands Farm house

Farmhouse. c.1800. Red brick in Flemish bond, with a red tile roof. Rectangular
double-depth plan plus rear service wing and small wing on right-hand side linked
to well-house (q.v.). Two storeys with cellar and attic, 3 bays; symmetrical; the
round-headed central doorway has a raised brick surround with stucco imposts
(probably remains of a former pedimented architrave), with a panelled and glazed
door under a fanlight with radiating glazing bars; the ground floor has canted bay
windows with sashes of 12 panes at the front and 8 panes in the sides, and
weatherboard cladding below the sills, and the 1st floor has sashes of 16, 12, and
16 panes. Dentilled eaves and rectangular hipped roof with chimney stacks on the
side ridges. The left return wall has (inter alia) French windows with margin
panes, a doorway and segmental-headed window towards the rear, a bell with a
wooden canopy under the eaves, and 2 inserted flat-roofed dormers in the roof;
the right-hand return wall has a 16-pane sash on each floor, 2 similar dormers,
and a tall single-storey wing with a 16-pane sash in the gable wall (which is
attached to the well-house, q.v.); the rear has (inter alia) a large service wing
in the centre with large segmental-headed windows and roof hipped at the
junction. Interior not of special interest.
