01/08/91 Nos.37 AND 38
GV II
Pair of town houses. Probably 1822-25; altered. Red brick in
Flemish bond, with sandstone dressings and slate roof.
Double-depth plan, each house single-fronted and with a back
extension. Two storeys over cellars, 2+2 bays, with plain
frieze and moulded cornice. Each has the doorway to the left,
up 3 and 4 steps respectively, but differing in detail: No.37
has a doorcase of engaged Tuscan columns with square abaci,
plain frieze and prominent moulded cornice (slightly
over-lapping No.36 to the left), plain jambs with imposts, an
elliptical fanlight and 6-panel door; the doorway to No.38 is
round-headed and has an architrave with set-in Tuscan
quarter-columns, a plain lintel and a semicircular fanlight;
and a lobby doorway with wedge lintel immediately to the left
of the steps. The windows have raised sills and wedge lintels,
all sashed without glazing bars (except at ground floor of
No.38 which has altered glazing), and those at No.37 unhorned.
Each has 2 chimneys (one each side of the ridge). Rear and
INTERIORS not inspected. No.37 was probably designed for
owner-occupation and No.38 for tenancy. The items closely
resemble Nos.39 and 40 to the right (q.v.).
