Nos.39 AND 40
GV II
Pair of town houses, No.40 now office (incorporated with No.41
to the right, q.v.). Probably 1822-25; altered. Red brick in
Flemish bond, with sandstone dressings and slate roof.
Double-depth plan, each house single-fronted and with a back
extension. Two storeys over cellars, 2+2 bays, with plain
frieze and moulded cornice. Each has the doorway to the left,
up 3 and 4 steps respectively, but differing in detail: No.39
has a doorcase of engaged Tuscan columns with square abaci,
plain frieze and prominent moulded cornice (slightly
over-lapping No.38 to the left), plain jambs with imposts, and
an elliptical fanlight (over a modern glazed door); the
doorway to No.40 is round-headed and has an architrave with
set-in Tuscan quarter-columns, a panelled door, a plain lintel
and a semicircular fanlight; and a raised lobby doorway to the
left (served by the same steps) with a moulded architrave. All
the windows are unhorned sashes without glazing bars, and have
raised sills and wedge lintels. To the left of No.40 is a lead
downspout (bottom section replaced with iron). Each has 2
chimneys (one each side of the ridge). Rear and INTERIORS not
inspected. No.39 was probably designed for owner-occupation
and No.40 for tenancy. The items closely resemble Nos.37 and
38 to the left (q.v.).
