Nos.1 AND 2

Pair of cottages. c1800. Timber-framed, rendered and
weatherboarded, hipped slate roof, central red brick stack.
Rectangular plan.
2 storeys. Front N elevation, rendered with lower
weatherboarding, each house has single ground and first floor
window and a doorway on outer side, stack in party wall. All 4
windows sashes with thin glazing bars (no horns) 3x4 panes.
Upper windows less deep than lower. Both front doorways have
small sloping bracketed hoods, doors have 4 flush panels with
bead moulding. Rear, S elevation weatherboarded, first floor
windows now 2-light casements with glazing bars, 2x3 panes,
ground floor one similar window and one without glazing bars.
One boarded door with simple C20 side glazed porch, other
similar, covered with C20 conservatory. E side elevation
weatherboarded, ground floor C20 casement window with glazing
bars, 2x3 panes. First floor, C19 single-light casement with
metal stay, glazing bars, 1x3 panes. W elevation similar,
first-floor window similar but C20 replacement, ground floor,
simple C20 3-light casement. The pair represent a class of
simple Essex timber-framed Georgian houses relatively common
in the area but which have usually been considerably altered
by modernisation. The front elevation is remarkably original
except that it has been rendered over. It is probably
weatherboarded beneath like the sides and rear.
