Swedenborgian chapel, then masonic lodge. 1698. Remodelled and
converted as a masonic lodge, 1802, with mid and late C19
internal alterations. Restored 1958 and remodelled 1978.
Brick, partly rendered, with ashlar dressings and slate roof.
2 storeys; 5x3 windows.
Dagger Lane front has to left a single bay with coped parapet
and round-arched glazing bar stair window with voussoirs,
keystone carved with Masonic symbols, and impost band
inscribed "Minerva Lodge 1802". Below, C20 door with overlight
and brick flat arch. To right, a slightly projecting bay with
a 24-pane and a 16 pane sash. Below, a reeded wooden doorcase
with fielded 6-panel door and fanlight, flanked to right by a
16-pane sash with brick flat arch. To right again, a lower
range with two C20 glazing bar sashes on each floor.
C20 facing gable to Dagger Lane has three 16-pane sashes with
a datestone below the central one. Below, a full-width porch
with swept lead roof and 6-panel door with overlight flanked
by two 16-pane sashes. Beyond, to left, a smaller 6-pane sash.
All these windows have brick flat arches.
INTERIOR has on the first floor the temple of 1802.
Rectangular room with angled corners, with dentillated
cornice, frieze with Latin inscription, and coved ceiling with
central boss, painted with Masonic devices. On either side, 2
round-arched recesses containing niches with busts. Apsidal
entrance end has a curved 6-panel corner door and a similar
round-headed door, now blocked, in the opposite corner. In the
centre, a recess flanked by Ionic quarter pilasters, with
creased ceiling. In the recess, a tabernacle with 2 Ionic
columns and segmental pediment, containing an inscribed board
with brackets carrying Corinthian columns.
Apsidal dais end has a moulded round arch carried on short
Corinthian columns, with painted text and keystone. In the
centre, a recess flanked by Ionic quarter pilasters,
containing a curtained tabernacle with Corinthian columns and
segmental pediment. On either side, fitted oak stalls. Side
walls have single round-arched recesses containing niches and
busts. Fittings, mainly mid C19, include carved chairs and
reading desks, and 2 rows of fitted benches along either side.
Adjoining assembly hall has a curved 6-panel door to the
Temple, flanked by Doric columns painted with masonic emblems,
and ball finials. At the opposite end, a moulded panelled
double door to the former dining room. Side wall has C20
glazed doors. Fittings include elliptical-arched moulded
boards with flanking Ionic columns and keystones, carrying
names of Masters. Former dining room, now main hall, has
stop-chamfered cross beam ceiling, and on the south side, 2
blocked windows of the former chapel. At one end, a central
round-headed niche fronted by a sculpture of Minerva flanked
by Science and Art, by WD Keyworth, 1854.
Ground-floor entrance hall contains a plaster sculpture of
Minerva, on a marble base, a bust of Queen Victoria, dated
1902, and a portrait medallion of Canon Kemp, 1885.
