House. c1830s. Local stone rubble, stuccoed and blocked out
with rusticated quoins. Slate roof, hipped at ends with
slurried slate roof laid in diminishing courses. Stacks with
rendered shafts with cable moulding and old chimney pots.
Plan: backing directly onto the road. Double-depth plan, 2
rooms wide with a central passage containing the stair, rear
left service room. A probably later block adjoins at the left
end.
EXTERIOR: 2 storeys. Symmetrical 3-bay front plus one-window
block to the left, slightly broken forward. Central open porch
with fluted columns supporting flat roof. Half-glazed front
door with reeded doorcase. 3 first-floor round-headed c1860s
sash windows with geometric glazing bars and margin panes.
Similar left and right ground-floor windows with margin panes.
The left hand block also has rusticated quoins and one first-
and one ground-floor tripartite sash window. Rear elevation,
facing the road has a tall round-headed stair window with
diamond panes and 2- and 3-light casements with small panes;
centre ground-floor window blocked.
INTERIOR: preserves C19 joinery including panelled doors in
reeded doorcases. Stick baluster stair with ramped handrail.
Main room chimney-pieces appear to be replaced. Rear left
kitchen has good granite-paved floor and service room off has
Ashburton limestone floor.
Historical note: said to have been the dower house to
Biggadon, largely demolished. Richmal Crompton, the author of
the Just William books, lived here at one time.
