Description

BUCKFASTLEIGH

SX76SE COLSTON ROAD
1011-1/4/11 (West side)
06/01/83 Agricultural range immediately west
of Colston Farmhouse
(Formerly Listed as:
COLSTON ROAD
Barn immediately to W of Colston
Farmhouse)

GV II

Agricultural range consisting of 2 adjoining but staggered
blocks, a barn with higher end stable with hayloft over and
then a stockshed with hayloft over. Probably early C19. Local
stone rubble, corrugated-iron roofs.
Plan: aligned roughly with the crosswing of the farmhouse
(qv), with which the buildings create an overall L-plan
arrangement. Access from a farm track at right-angles to the
road which then turns round the end of the stockshed to a yard
behind the house. Built on a steep slope, the barn range below
the stockshed. Barn range has opposed doors (rear door
smaller) to left and lean-to shippon at a lower level built
against the rear side. Stockshed blind on track side, opening
onto the yard side.
EXTERIOR: the barn range has large double plank doors in the
centre with strap hinges, facing the track, with a small door
to the right. Stable at the left has a small door and loft
door over. To the rear a probably secondary shippon with a
lean-to corrugated-iron roof and 5 doorways with segmental
brick arches. Loft doorway in right return of barn. Stockshed
range is broken forward from the barn and built directly off
the rock with footings of rounded boulders. The yard side has
2 segmental-headed openings.
INTERIOR of barn retains former hip at right end (roof now
gabled) and pegged A-frame trusses with butt collars. Solid
crosswall between stable and barn.
