Commemorative cross. Early C20. Massive granite celtic cross
with incised decoration, moulded plinth and iron railed
enclosure. This was erected to the memory of Alfred Lord
Tennyson on the highest point of one of his regular walks from
his house Farringford (see item Freshwater Parish) where he
lived between 1853 until his death in 1892. The inscription
reads:- "In memory of Alfred Lord Tennyson this Cross is
raised as a beacon to sailors by the people of Freshwater and
other friends in England and America". On the other side is
the inscription:-
"Tennyson. Born August 6 1809. Died October 6 1892".
