Terraced substantial town house. c.1750-53 by the master builder
John Phillips in partnership with George Shakespear, on a Berkeley Estate
lease. Brown brick, slate roof. 3 storeys, basement and dormered mansard.
5 windows wide. Ionic columned doorcase, with full entablature, to right
framing panelled door and patterned fanlight. Recessed glazing bar sashes
under flat gauged arches, in stuccoed reveals. 1st floor painted stone
plat band. Moulded stone cornice below parapet with coping. Wrought iron
area railings with scrollwork standards flanking front steps. Original
lead rainwater head and downpipe. Plain rear elevation with a 3-window bow
to right and a 2 storey wing linking coach house/stables in mews. Interior
virtually unaltered, apart from some partitioning, including front
compartment staircase to 1st floor with stone treads, wrought iron
balustrade and ramped handrail, the compartment ceiling with enriched
cornice and fanned medallion-rose; "Chinese Room" to 1st floor rear
with hand painted wall paper; good plasterwork ceilings and enriched
cornices, carved wood and statuary marble chimney pieces, overmantel
mirrors and pier glasses, original 1st floor rear water-closet, etc.
