Memorial to Robert Watson (1819-1891).

This late-Victorian memorial to Robert Watson is made of metal rather than local stone and pings when tapped! The monument was made by an American firm, in 1890, from Bridgeport, Connecticut. The inscription on the front reads, "To the memory of Robert Watson born at Hamsterley, January 8, 1819, died at Bishop Auckland May 9, 1891". The Northern Echo recorded his life under the heading of "From Farm servant to Mayor-The Story of a Self-made Man".
