Pair of attached houses, now flats. c1860. Built by George
Gay. Limestone ashlar with lateral and party wall stacks, roof
not visible. Double-depth plan. Classical style.
Each of 2 storeys, basement and attic; 2-window range. A
symmetrical front has projecting ends, banded ground floor to
an entablature, with balustrades below the windows and to the
verandah, paired first-floor pilasters to a dentil cornice and
an attic storey with moulded parapet; entrances in the ends.
Windows have elliptical-arched heads, bracketed cornices and
plate-glass sashes: 3-light bows to the wings, 3-light windows
above, single windows in between, and smaller attic windows,
with shouldered architraves. A cast-iron verandah extends
across between the wings with 2 elliptical arches and a
balustrade to the first floor.
The right return to No.4 Woodland Road has a 3-window range,
with the right-hand section projecting, and a distyle-in-antis
porch with Doric columns to a half-glazed screen and door. A
3-light bow to the wing, and a single-storey porch to the rear
with a segmental arch with a 3-pane fanlight and 2-leaf,
2-panel doors.
INTERIOR: dogleg ground-floor stairs to a top-lit open-well
stair with cast-iron balusters, a decorated plaster ceiling in
the ground-floor right-hand room, modillion cornices, 6-panel
doors and panelled shutters.
A common plan and similar elevation to a number of listed
houses built by Gay in Cotham and Tyndall's Park.
