Terrace house. c.1734 by John Nolloth(?), carpenter, altered on ground floor early
C20. Stock brick with red brick dressings, slate roofs. 4 storeys. Each front 3
windows wide. Ground floor altered for restaurant with large leaded windows
inserted, revolving doors and fascia. Upper floors have very slightly recessed
sashes in exposed box frames, some with glazing bars,others altered as casements, all
under flat gauged red brick arches. Nos. 26 and 28 have brick aprons ornamented with
guttae to 2nd floor windows. Stucco cornice below attic storey, parapet with coping.
Interiors much altered but retain considerable amount of original panelling in part
reset for restaurant adaptation. Karl Marx and his family lived at No. 28 from 1851
to 1856 (L.C.C. plaque) and listed Grade I for this reason.
