Semi-detached villas. c1830-40 (Eyre Estate) with some alterations and later
rear alterations. Stucco; slate roof. Grecian. 2 storeys and central pedimented
attic. Each 2 windows wide with outer recessed entrance bays. Pilastered
doorways with entablatures, that of No 28 altered. Architraved sash and
casement windows. Main block has quoin pilasters and pilasters flanking central
party wall recess. Simplified entablature, below flat eaves of hipped roof, is
broken by central 2-window pedimented attic. Cast iron anthemion-geometric
patterned balconies to 1st floor windows. No 28 was the home of the poet Thomas
Hood from 1844-45 (LCC plaque); from c1900-1961 Devonshire Lodge housed the St
John's Wood Art Club whoses members included such artists as Alma-Tadema, Dendy
Sadler, Alfred Gilbert, Charles and C A Voysey, etc. Listed II* for artistic
and historical associations.
