Grammar School now library block of comprehensive school. Dated and inscribed
over entrance NELSON SCHOOL WIGTON FOUNDED AD 1896 with coat of arms; probably
by C.J. Ferguson. Red sandstone ashlar. Steeply pitched graduated greenslate
roof with coped gables and square stone chimney stack; square wooden cupola with
pointed spire and lucarnes. Large 2-storey building in U-shape. Off-centre
large canted bay stone-mullioned window, with leaded panes, projects above eaves
with shaped parapet. Entrance to left has stone architrave. Further large
stone-mullioned windows with leaded panes. Projecting 2-storey gabled extension
to left has similar windows. Lower gabled extension to right has porch with
inscription and date. Further contemporary gabled extensions to right have
stone-mullioned windows. C20 extensions are of no interest.
