4/57 Waterhouse Well
- II

The well is shown on the Ordnance Survey map as Waterhouse Well, but is
known locally as Monks Well. Covered well. Probably medieval in origin,
rebuilt in C20. Herringbone-tooled sandstone. Rectangular on plan, built
into sloping ground. Rectangular doorway beneath trapezoid lintel to south,
approached down a flight of steps. Small slit at ground level to north.
Pitched roof, flattened at top, of 3 stone slabs. Interior: rough stone
seat set against the north wall. A stone water channel protrudes from the
east wall. The water is evacuated via a drainhole in the stone flag floor.
