10/115 Great Heasley Farmhouse
- II
Farmhouse. Early to mid C17 with probably later additions. Minor mid to late C19
alterations. Coursed stone rubble to ground floor and rendered cob to first floor.
Rendered to rear. Gable-ended scantle-slate roof. Rendered stone stacks with
weatherings.
Plan and development: Long 5-room plan, facing farmyard to south-east. Complicated
plan but could be interpreted as a much-altered 3 room and cross-passage house,
consisting of hall to centre with axial stack to left, cross passage and former inner
room to right. If this is the correct interpretation then the left-hand end room is
a later C17 addition and the right-hand end room (inner room) was probably rebuilt in
the mid to late C17 and extended by a further one-room addition to right with
integral end stack (present kitchen) at the same time (see steeper roof pitched over
right hand end). Shallow projecting bay to probable former inner room marking
position of former doorway (see straight joints) and probably added when this end was
partly rebuilt and extended in the later C17. One-storey lean-to at rear of right
hand end probably an addiion. Inserted staircase in cross-passage, probably in the
mid to late C19 (although the present staircase could replace an earlier C17
insertion). It is possible that the house has late medieval origins but access to
the roof was not possible at time of survey (September 1987) and no evidence of a
medieval roof was noted in the first floor rooms. One further explanation of the plan
would be as former C17 three-room house with unheated central room, consisting of
central entrance hall (see former doorway in projection) with staircase and unheated
stone room behind, flanked by heated end rooms, and with 2-room later addition to
left. House possibly latterly divided (see 2 stairs). Two storeys.
Exterior: Roughly-symmetrical front with 5 windows to first floor and 4 to ground
floor; mid to late C19 two and 3-light wooden casements, right-hand ground floor
casement with red-brick segmental-arched head. Roughly-central C19 six panelled door
with beaded-flush lower panels, raised and fielded middle panels and glazed upper
panels, chamfered C19 frame, and C19 bracketed gabled proch. C20 half-glazed door
between first and second windows from right with bracketed C19 gabled porch and C20
half-glazed door with rectangular overlight at left-hand end. Second ground-floor
window from right (hall window) has been narrowed at some time (see straight joints).
Blocked doorway to right of right-hand window (see straight joints). Full-height
shallow rectangular projection to left of right-hand doorway (to right of change in
roof pitch), probably former entrance bay, with evidence of blocked former ground-
floor doorway (see straight joint).
Interior: Central ground-floor room (hall) with pair of roughly-chamfered cambered
C17 cross beams and joists with beaded edges (all glazed to take later plaster, since
removed). Fireplace mostly rebuilt in the C20, but retaining C17 roughly-chamfered
cambered wooden lintel. Right-hand ground-floor room (present kitchen) has C19
ovolo-moulded cross beam and wall beams with straight cut stops. Left-hand ground-
floor room has roughly chamfered cross beam with sawn joists, and C17 open fireplace
with dressed sandstone splayed jambs, chamfered wooden lintel with scroll stops,
brick-arched bread oven to right (minus door) and blocked segmental brick-arched
bread oven low down to left. Roofspace not inspected.
